A first home buyer's checklist

Six general checks before buying your first home, from the real budget to the paperwork.

Buying your first home is exciting, and a little overwhelming. Here is a simple checklist to keep you calm.

First, know your real budget. Beyond the price, plan for registration, stamp duty, moving and basic furniture.

Second, think about daily life. How long is the commute, and are schools, shops and hospitals nearby?

Third, check the paperwork. Make sure the approvals and the title documents are clear, and have a lawyer look at them.

Fourth, look at the builder's past projects, and visit the site at different times of day.

Finally, read the sale agreement slowly before you sign. A careful week now saves years of worry later.
