Myth vs Science · Short

The 5-second rule is a lie

Bacteria move onto dropped food in under a second.

Dropped your snack? Five-second rule, right? Science says no.

Researchers at Rutgers University dropped watermelon, bread, buttered bread and gummy sweets onto steel, tile, wood and carpet, from less than one second up to five minutes.

Bacteria started moving onto the food in under one second. Longer contact meant more bacteria, but even a quick drop was not clean.

Wet food was the worst. Watermelon picked up the most. Gummy sweets picked up the least.

And the surprise? Carpet transferred fewer bacteria than tile or steel.

So the real rule isn't five seconds. It's what you dropped, and where it landed.
