Historian Roger Ekirch spent years reading old court records, diaries and medical books written before electric light. He kept finding the same strange phrase: first sleep, and second sleep.

People went to bed soon after dark. Around midnight they woke up, fully alert, for an hour or more. Nobody worried about it.

They prayed. They talked quietly with their partners. They added wood to the fire, and some even visited their neighbours.

Then came cheap artificial light. Streetlamps, then light bulbs, pushed bedtime later and later, until the two sleeps were squeezed into one solid block.

In 1992, psychiatrist Thomas Wehr gave volunteers fourteen hours of darkness every night. Within a few weeks, many of them drifted back into two sleeps, with a calm waking gap in between.
