Every year, after weeks of heat, the first rain arrives and the whole country breathes again. But how?

In summer, the land heats up much faster than the sea around it.

Hot air over the land rises, and cooler, wet air from the ocean rushes in to take its place.

These winds carry huge amounts of moisture from the sea toward the coast.

When they meet hills and mountains, the air rises, cools, and the moisture falls as heavy rain.

The rains usually reach the southern coast first in early June, then slowly travel north across the country.
