How plants make food from light

Photosynthesis in under a minute: water, air, sunlight, and a leaf that works like a tiny kitchen.

A plant cannot walk to the kitchen, so it makes its own food. Here is how.

Its roots pull water up from the soil, all the way to the leaves.

Tiny openings on the leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air around them.

Inside each leaf, a green pigment called chlorophyll catches sunlight.

That light energy joins the water and carbon dioxide to make sugar, which is the plant's food.

And the leftover is oxygen, released into the air for us to breathe. Every leaf is a small solar kitchen.
